Travel on dialysis

How much does dialysis abroad cost, and who pays?

Price of a holiday dialysis session abroad, what is included, and how reimbursement by your health insurer may work. Questions to ask before you book.

Cost is often the first question patients ask. The answer depends on the country, the centre and your health insurance.

The price of a session

In our destinations (Tunisia, Turkey and Morocco), a holiday dialysis session starts from €200, and usually ranges up to around €350 depending on the centre, the city and the treatment (HD or HDF). You always receive the complete price before booking.

What is usually included

  • The dialysis session itself and standard consumables
  • Medical and nursing supervision during the session
  • Standard medications given during dialysis (for example heparin)

Ask in advance about medications such as EPO or iron, about transport between the hotel and the centre, and about extra tests.

Can my health insurer reimburse it?

It depends on your country and your insurer. Some national health systems reimburse part or all of planned care outside the country, sometimes only with prior approval. Tunisia, Turkey and Morocco are outside the European Union, so the European Health Insurance Card does not apply there.

  • Ask your health insurer before you travel which documents they need
  • Keep every invoice and the dialysis reports from the centre abroad
  • Ask whether a prior authorisation form is required
  • Check whether your travel insurance covers a medical problem related to kidney disease
