Travelling with a fistula or a catheter: protect your access

Your vascular access is your lifeline. How to protect an AV fistula, graft or dialysis catheter during flights, at the beach and in the pool.

Your vascular access is what makes dialysis possible, so it deserves special care on holiday.

If you have a fistula or a graft

  • Check the thrill (the buzzing) every morning and evening
  • No blood pressure cuff, injections or blood tests on that arm
  • Do not carry heavy bags or sleep on the arm
  • Avoid tight sleeves, watches and bracelets on the fistula arm
  • Protect it from sunburn and cuts

If you have a catheter

  • Keep the dressing clean and dry at all times
  • Swimming is usually not allowed with a catheter: ask your team
  • Watch for fever, redness or discharge, and call the centre immediately if they appear

Can I swim with a fistula?

Many patients with a well-healed fistula can swim, but avoid going in the water right after a session when the needle sites are still fresh. Ask your renal team what they recommend for you.
