Holiday food is part of the pleasure. The Mediterranean kitchen offers many options that fit well with a dialysis diet, if you choose wisely.
Often good choices
- Grilled fish or chicken with rice or couscous
- Salads based on lettuce, cucumber and peppers
- Bread, pasta and white rice in normal portions
- Apples, grapes, berries or pineapple for dessert
To limit
- Dried fruit and dates, very rich in potassium
- Tomato-based sauces and stews in large amounts
- Olives, pickles and cured meats, very salty
- Chickpea dishes and lentil soups
- Sweet mint tea and juices in large glasses (fluid and sugar)
Ordering in a restaurant
Ask for "no extra salt", sauces on the side and grilled rather than fried dishes. A smaller portion of a rich dish is often better than avoiding it completely: enjoy the taste, mind the quantity.
