Key points
- Visiting family is one of the main reasons patients travel
- Summer is high season: book 2 to 3 months ahead
- Choose a centre near the family home, not only near the airport
For many patients living in Europe, the most important trip of the year is the one back home to see family. Dialysis should not stop that.
Book earlier than for a holiday
Summer and religious holidays are the busiest periods for dialysis centres in Tunisia, Morocco and Turkey. Ask two to three months ahead if you can.
Choose the right city
Family homes are not always near tourist areas. Tell us the town where your family lives: we look for the nearest centre and can organise transfers.
Family meals
Family meals are generous, and saying no is hard. A few habits help:
- Explain your diet to one family member who can help in the kitchen
- Ask for a portion of grilled meat or fish and plain rice or couscous
- Limit dried fruit, olives, tomato sauces and sweet tea (see eating out)
- Keep your phosphate binders with you at every meal
Heat and long days
Summer days are long and hot. Rest during the hottest hours and follow our tips for dialysis in hot weather.
