Spending the winter in the sun on dialysis: long stays abroad

How retired dialysis patients spend one to three months in the sun: booking long stays, blood tests, medication and contact with your home unit.

Key points

  • Stays of one to three months are possible
  • Regular blood tests continue abroad
  • Stay in close contact with your home nephrologist

More and more retired patients spend part of the winter in the sun. On dialysis, a long stay is possible with a little more preparation.

Booking a long stay

Ask as early as possible: a long stay means reserving the same slot for many weeks. The centre may ask for a longer medical file and a letter from your nephrologist.

Blood tests and follow-up

Your usual monthly blood tests continue at the centre abroad. Ask for copies and send them to your home unit so your nephrologist can adjust treatment from a distance.

Medication

  • Bring enough for the whole stay, or check with your doctor how to get refills abroad
  • EPO and iron: discuss in advance with your home unit and the centre abroad
  • Keep a list of your medications with their international names

Where to stay

Agadir and Marrakech are popular for winter long stays; see our weather chart and winter-sun destinations.
